This is still an issue. I imported a .gexf file, applied some partitions, duplicated the workspace a couple times and applied a single attribute equality filter to each workspace. I have done this with different data sets. One attempt resulted in the error message described in previous posts. Most attempts load without error; however, workspaces are missing and all filters are applied to a single workspace and converted to the one that was applied to that workspace. Furthermore, there is an issue with the way the data is loaded as applying the filter results in all nodes filtered out. Note that the filters were boolean fields.

Hopefully this helps narrow the scope a bit. I also recommend the issue be a high priority. It is very annoying--to say the least--to start from scratch every time you want to analyze a data set (though it did improve my Gephi skills...).

Hi Folks!
Me too suffering from the same issue.
Uploaded the nodes and edges table from csv and on performing certain operations, not able to reopen the saved gephi file.
Get an error saying file should be with .gephi extension.

Using version 0.8.2
Tried reinstalling but in vain.

I don't wanna get bogged down with this issue . Help!

If I have to be able to save gephi projects let me know what is to be done ?

Hi,
There are some serialization compatibility problems between Java 6 and Java 7 in gephi projects.
I advice to always use the same version until we fix these problems, or use gexf if possible.

Also, exporting gexf files is more stable at the moment than project files independently of Java version.

I was experiencing this problem, so I decreased the amount of memory available in the gephi.conf file (instructions here: https://gephi.org/users/install/#memory). I had earlier increased this figure.

For other people reporting this bug, have you also been changing your gephi.conf files?

Hi all,

same here, I also keep getting the "Gephi file extension" error. It will open anyway but then the saving error occurs from time to time...

Yes, thanks a lot for developing gephi. It's an incredible piece of software.

Are there any news about this issue? I'm planning to use gephi for a 3-month project, but my colleague is having all the time this problem and we have to decide whether we use gephi (which I am for) or another software...

I believe I'm getting a very similar problem, but without seeing the NullPointerException error.

After importing my Nodes and Edges from separate CSV files, I save the project as a Gephi file and see no errors. But when reopening this document, nothing appears. However, if I perform no different actions and export to a GDF first, I *can* reopen that file successfully. However, I still can't save a .gephi file from that .gdf and reopen that .gephi without it appearing empty.

I should add that I can successfully save .gephi files from the example .gexf and .gdf files provided on the wiki, so I suspect it's something particular to my dataset. However, from what I can tell everything is formatted correctly.

I have attached both the files in question. Help appreciated!

Hi,

Attached is the file. I cannot open this via double-clicking on it - get the error message about an improper file, and the splash screen just hangs. Not present in my task manager - cannot kill it. If I open gephi, then try to load the file, I get the messed-up viz seen above (earlier message).

Would be great if I can get further beyond these save-load problems. It looks like a nice tool.

Hmmmm, I cannot open the saved project now - I double clicked on the file icon (file says Gephi Project file, and is 2,228KB), and received the following warning message:

The project file couldn't be opened. Please check the file havs the .gephi extension.

NullPointerException - null

This is the same "warning" message that I received earlier when trying to save the project file for the first time.
The client then seemed to just hang - the launch never progressed, and I just have a frozen splash screen. I still have ~3.5GB RAM available.

Finally, I tried the following:

1. Launch Gephi 0.8.2.
2. Open the project file from the running application.

This "worked" sort-of, but the problem here is that the original "default" graph - the big square of nodes you typically get initially, seemed to be overlayed-mixed in with the refined graph that I saved - with filtering, coloring and layout - see the attached image.

More confused that before.

Hi - thanks fot he quick reply! Well, I was able to recreate the project, and successfully save my graph. If the problem pops up again I will include the error message, though it was rather brief - "Gephi could not open the project, be sure that it has the .gephi extension". That was about it. Thought it was odd since I was trying to save the project.
